December Sweatdown 2K23

The December Sweatdown 2K23 is here, the best songs I’ve listened to in the past 12 months.

I do these Spotify Playlists every month and try to feature mostly new music. I’ve been doing it since April of 2018. I’m proud of the fact it’s one of the few consistent things I do every month. I might not work out as much as I’d like to. I might not write as much as I’d like to. But I absolutely do these playlists every month.

December is a big month for me as I get to look through my playlists and find the best songs I listened to for the year. I do have one rule: one song per band. There’s absolutely songs that would have made the list if I didn’t do this (Run Like Hell by Gunship, Eventually by Hotel Mira, Talk Anymore by Battle Tapes) and I also try to make sure everything is a song released in 2023 or close to 2023, even if it was something I listened to a lot (In 2023 I listened to a lot of The 1975 and even seen them live but I didn’t feel right to add them to the playlist. My Kink is Karma by Chappell Roan technically came out mid 2022 but I didn’t hear it until September and her album came out in 2023 so I felt it was fair. I Like (the idea of) You by Tessa Violet was a song I listened to a lot of in 2023 but I couldn’t justify it on a 2023 list. Feel it All The Time by Soccer Mommy is really a 2022 song but keeping that off would be dishonest to my 2023.)

There isn’t really a ranking to the list, but I would say the top 15 songs are absolutely my favourite songs of the year. I put them in bold to just make it clear those are my Top 15. Don’t take it as a hard list, anything can shift around. I Been Young by George Clanton was definitely my favourite song of the year. What’s been some of my other favourite songs of the year since I started doing these playlists?

Sweatdown Song of the Year 2018: Walking Away by St. Lucia
Sweatdown Song of the Year 2019: Ordinary Fools Pt. 2 by Chain Gang of 1974
Sweatdown Song of the Year 2020:
Faith by Culture Wars
Sweatdown Song of the Year 2021:
better with you (the world’s burning) by Chief
Sweatdown Song of the Year 2022:
This Can’t Be Everything by Phantoms
Sweatdown Song of the Year 2023:
I Been Young by George Clanton

As always you can find the playlist on Spotify. Be sure to follow all of the bands you enjoy listening to and add them to your like lists so they come up on your future Spotify plays. Many of these bands are barely struggling to get any money from Spotify, especially due to their new stupid rules, so every spin helps.
