January Sweatdown 2K25

The January Sweatdown 2K25 is here and with it comes some old favourites and a song from 2010 that’s been stuck in my head all year. Yeah the year just started get steppin’

The Sweatdown has existed since April of 2018 as a monthly collection of music I’ve been listening to. Sometimes it’s old tracks but it’s usually new music. Everything from indie to synthwave to rock to alternative and more. Every December is a culmination of the music I’ve listened to.

Here’s some thoughts on some of the artists and songs on this month’s playlist:

So The Sun. The year started for me and that’s the only song that’s mattered to me. It was hard to complete this playlist because it’s all that goes through my mind. It’s mostly what I hear at the gym. It’s going to be my motivation for the year.

A lot of bands are familiar to the Sweatdown (Blue Stones, Hotel Mira, George Clanton, Ocean Grove, Black Caviar!) so that’s been a big part of this playlist. The Happy Return make their happy return with The Bridge.

I cracked up hearing So Leo by Tinsley. I was waiting for someone to do a song like this. “All your friends are having babies while you’re a cradle robber” is such a sick line.

The line in Slowly Slowly’s How Are You Mine? in the chorus, “I turned my back on a homicide but she had love so alkaline” drove me mad. I appreciate the band focusing so hard on hitting their rhymes. I figure they mean the love is so high in pH value it can corrode? It energizes you like an alkaline battery? I don’t know where they were going but I appreciate it either way.

SOWHAT1999 by Ocean Grove is incredibly 1999 nu metal. To the point where at first I hated it and then I appreciated it.

Strike First by Enemy to All features Tatsumi Fujinami and Genichiro Tenryu on the cover. Good match. Also I love the soundbyte from Boardwalk Empire.

Was Final Battle by Immortal Girlfriend and Monteasy made for Ring of Honor Final Battle and just didn’t come out in enough time? Feels like it.
